Route pittoresque de la Corniche

Between Gauriac and Bourg, the lakeshore road (Route de la Corniche) runs along the GirondeEstuary, sometimes at the foot and sometimes and the top of the cliff. The landscape is dotted with many cave dwellings. You can spot them from the road or pass in front of them along the area’s hiking trails, although they are not open for visits: people still live in some of them! This picturesque route is also known as the “flowering lakeshore road” and the “captains’ route”. During your outing, you can admire beautiful houses built by old long-distance sailors who would bring exotic plant species back from their trips, which can still be seen in the gardens. This 13 km itinerary is punctuated by information panels called “windows onto the estuary”, recounting the stories of the Mascaret wave, the islands, the fish, the shipwrecks and more.
