Eglise de Saint-Germain-de-Campet

Founded by Saint Gerard, abbot of the Sauve Majeure, it is already mentioned in 1130. It is a specimen of a rural church reduced to its simplest expression: a nave without transept and apse, without vaults and without windows. In 1979, Michèle Gaborit, historian, showed that the two side walls dated from the 11th century, whereas the regular Romanesque structure included the façade as well as the choir. In the 19th century, the inhabitants of Montarouch had asked to use the ruins of St Germain to build a chapel in the church of St John of Jerusalem but this project was not accepted and the church of St Germain fell further into ruin.
