Léonie, a young pregnant woman, is about to give birth a month ahead of schedule. Her husband, Monsieur Toudoux, is subjected to the whims, reproaches and pettiness of his wife, his in-laws (the Champrinet family, who disapprove of their marriage), and the midwife, Madame Virtuel.
