Carrelets de Pauillac

Located all along the Gironde estuary, carrelets are part of the typical estuary landscape. These fishermen's huts, perched on stilts above the water, are a veritable symbol of local culture. They are equipped with a net that is lowered into the water at high tide and raised by a hand-cranked winch at low tide. The fish (tuna, lamprey, eel or white shrimp, which are then shared between friends) are then caught in the net and collected in a basket. Today, carrelets are no longer used for commercial fishing. Today, the carrelets are no longer used for commercial fishing, but their owners continue to maintain this mostly family-run heritage, which is a delight for walkers.
