Pigeonnier des Bouhets

This cylindrical tower, topped by a conical roof, is a former dovecote. The overhanging entablature protects the birds from rodents, while the round openings above, calibrated to the size of the pigeons, prevent birds of prey from entering the building. Numerous pigeon lofts still exist in Gironde, where under the Ancien Régime, the seigneurial monopoly did not exclude small family breeding operations. Until the seventeenth century, small peasant dovecotes were installed under the roof of the house, before becoming an annex building, often housing a pigsty on the first floor and a henhouse on the second floor.
